Dry mouth is a condition which can affect up to 20% of the population. This condition is usually caused by the malfunction of the salivary glands which fail to produce sufficient saliva to keep the mouth moist. There are many factors that can contribute to dry mouth. These include:

-Dehydration: Through a lack of water by not drinking enough, excessive sweating or being ill

-Conditions: Such as Diabetes or Sjögren Syndrome

-Medications: Some prescribed medications may cause dry mouth as a side effect

-Oral Thrush

-Snoring or breathing through the mouth at night: This can occur when you have a blocked nose or if you naturally sleep with your mouth open

-Anxiety or stress

-Cancer Treatment: Radiotherapy or chemotherapy may result in dry mouth

It may often go unnoticed but most oral functions are facilitated through the properties of saliva, most notably speech, chewing and swallowing. Due to this, dry mouth can have a significant impact on a sufferer’s quality of life, making it extremely uncomfortable and also occasionally leading to bad breath if left untreated. In order to help relieve the unpleasant symptoms of dry mouth, there are many products available which can treat the discomfort and promote saliva flow.
